Experience a Quality Early Childhood EducationAt Holy Cross Catholic SchoolWe believe children learn best through hands-on play, active exploration and engaging experiences. Our preschool and pre-K programs are designed to meet children where they are—cognitively, socially, culturally and physically—helping them develop essential skills in ways that feel natural and exciting. Through a mix of whole group, small group and individualized instruction, our experienced educators help develop curiosity, confidence and a love for learning. By the time students are finished with pre-K, they will be ready and excited for kindergarten! Our goal is to help young students build strong skills in key developmental areas, following the Nebraska Early Learning Guidelines and the Archdiocese of Omaha’s curriculum standards. Parents of preschool and prekindergarten students can expect a strong foundation for future academic success, and teachers who make sure every child feels supported, inspired and ready to grow. Holy Cross early childhood classes foster social and emotional growth through engaging, play-based experiences. Children develop confidence and self-awareness as they explore and play, while teachers model self-control, cooperation and positive interactions. Through guided activities, students strengthen friendships and learn to navigate social situations—laying the foundation for strong interpersonal skills that support lifelong learning and success.
We encourage children to take initiative and explore new ideas in a supportive environment. And the impact of high-quality early education is clear: more than 73% of students in a Consortium school early childhood program assess at or above grade level in kindergarten, compared to just 52% of students who do not attend early childhood with us.
Alongside academic growth, our early childhood classes help strengthen fine motor skills, like grasping and writing, while also building gross motor skills through movement and play. We emphasize healthy habits and nutrition and encourage positive choices. Our approach is mind, body and spirit as we prepare children for success in school and in life.
Strong literacy skills are important. Our students learn to listen and follow directions, express their thoughts clearly and communicate with eye contact and manners.
Teachers help children scribble, draw and explore letters as they progress in recognizing the alphabet and developing writing skills. Children will also start to recognize sounds and patterns in language, build print awareness and follow words on a page from left to right. It’s always rewarding to see when the students begin to identify and correctly use letters to spell their own names and other words. The goal is for all to grow into confident readers, writers and communicators!
Our preschool and pre-K students develop number sense by counting, recognizing numeric symbols and understanding math concepts like “more” and “less.” They also explore shapes and patterns and start to work with measurements and comparisons.
Scientific thinking and exploration is encouraged through hands-on activities here at Holy Cross. Children learn the art of observation, how to ask questions and how to gather information. For this age group, teachers plan lots of sensory experiences to expand their understanding of the world.
Creativity. Expression. Movement. To support whole-child development, children engage in singing and dancing and learn rhythm and coordination. Art activities help children express themselves, and other dramatic play activities also help children use their imagination and build social skills and confidence.
Everything we do at Holy Cross Catholic School is rooted in our Catholic Faith and building a stronger relationship with Jesus Christ. Through this foundation, we are able to incorporate morals and values of the Catholic Faith into our daily routines. These building blocks of Faith not only create opportunities for our students to grow spiritually but also cognitively, emotionally, and socially. Children participate in both formal and spontaneous prayer, practice making the sign of the cross, listen to stories of Jesus’ love and explore the Bible and its many teachings.
